HVCC Newsletter September 2024

Late summer greeting from Hornsey Vale: we hope you’ve had a lovely summer!

Volunteering is the lifeblood of all community organisations, and this edition we’re celebrating our volunteers. On 28 August, volunteers past and present were invited to the Community Centre for an informal supper and celebration of their volunteering work.  It was lovely to see so many faces, and particularly heartwarming to introduce to each other volunteers who’d not had the chance to chat before because their paths had not crossed. You can read more about two such individuals—Val and Rose—below.

Maintenance Week 2024

The last week of August is always a busy one for Hornsey Vale: our annual Maintenance Week brings volunteers to the centre to do those jobs that are simply too difficult to manage while the centre is open—painting, cleaning furniture, reorganising storage and having a good old cleanup! The week terminates with a routine deep clean for the centre, which means everything will be looking fresh and clean for the new term. It’s a good time to remind everyone using the centre that it takes a lot of effort to keep an ageing building functioning safely and looking good, so we ask that everyone using the centre respects it and helps us keep it looking smart. A big thank you to everyone who has given their precious time and energy this week: we appreciate all of you very much. Photo gallery.

Are you interested in volunteering and meeting like-minded community-spirited people? We are always looking for help! Volunteer with us.

Autumn Clothes Swap: save the date

We’re excited to announce our inaugural clothes swap event, to be held on Saturday 12 October.

We are fundraising for our Main Hall acoustic project. Bring your wearable unwanted adult clothes (or pay at the door) and take home some new items to refresh your wardrobe.

We’ll be launching the event officially soon, but save the date, and do get in touch if you would like to volunteer, or if you could loan us clothes rails or coat hangers.

Main Hall acoustics: fundraising campaign

This autumn we launch a fundraising campaign for our much-needed acoustic treatment to our Main Hall. We know the acoustics of this space are challenging, and we have a plan to install a combination of ceiling and wall panels to improve the sound absorption. This will make the overall experience of using the space much more enjoyable, and will enable us to expand the range of activities we can offer there.
Our donation target is £2,500. Once this target is reached, HVCA will match it with existing funding. We know that many users of our hall have been asking for this, so we hope it’s a cause you can get behind. Anything you can afford to give would be greatly appreciated.

We’re recruiting

We have positions for up to 12 trustees on our Management Committee and are actively recruiting to boost our numbers.

We have vacancies on the management committee and, in particular, people with accounting experience. We warmly welcome interest from disabled people, people with Black and Asian heritage and young people (aged 18-30), all under-represented in our organisation. You can apply at any time; ask for our application pack if you’re interested in getting involved. Read more.
