HVCC Newsletter Spring 2026

At last, Spring is here! The daffodils are out in Stationers Park, the birds are singing brightly and you’re probably still making your way through you Easter eggs….lovely.

In this newsletter, you can find out how Hornsey Vale is working towards our green energy commitment, fill you in what’s new in our Ageing Well activities, and invite you to attend a public Hustings ahead of the local elections.

If you’re out and about and fancy something nice to eat in a friendly setting, then why not pop into our popular Soup Café between 11.30 and 2pm every Monday during term time. Enjoy a bowl of delicious freshly-made soup (soup served 12.00 – 1.30pm; free, suggested donation £2) or a two-course chef-cooked meal at our Lunch Club on Wednesdays (£5, please book in advance). The next Lunch Club will be on 6th May, booking opens 16th April.

Wellbeing for Over 50s

Our Ageing Well programme continues to evolve and attract more attendees.

The Starling Grief Tending Circle has been extended to late July while the Reach & Connect Artful Codgers group will be taking a short break until Summer.

We will be introducing new Live Well for Longer sessions on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month 12.30 – 1.30 pm. These will take the form of short research-backed presentations on actions you can take to improve health or avoid ill-health, followed by informal discussions. The first session is on Wednesday 22nd April – we hope to see you there!

You are invited to socialise over a bowl of soup or a pre-prepared meal afterwards. Board games and table tennis are available on request.

The rest of our Ageing well wellbeing activities will also be continuing throughout Spring, these activities are open for all local over 50s and are by donation.

You can find out more about the Lunch Club, Parkinson’s Move and Mix, Soup Café, Nordic Walking, chair yoga, Candy’s Dancing Stars and other regular activities on the Ageing Well with Hornsey Vale page.

Coming up in April

Ahead of the May local elections – join us meet your candidates for Stroud Green Ward at our public hustings.

Sunday 19th April 2026, 5pm to 7pm (doors open at 4.45pm)

What is a Hustings and why should I attend?

A hustings is a public meeting that brings electoral candidates (or party representatives) and voters together in the run up to an election. It is your chance to ask questions and hear directly from the people who are running to represent you. It’s a perfect opportunity to gather information that will enable you to make informed decisions when it is time to vote.

Find out more, including how to submit a question, on our Hustings 2026 page.

Hornsey Vale Youth Club

Centre News – Environment

With energy prices in the news, we’ve been thinking about how to go greener.

Following the conclusion of an extensive feasibility study conducted by Scene-Connect Ltd in 2025 we again worked with them to explore options for furthering installation possibilities. We’re delighted to announce that Hornsey Vale has been awarded a grant from Round 5 of Haringey’s Community Carbon Fund to cover most of the cost of installing solar panels on the roof.

We’re also looking for funding to install air-source heat pumps (ASHPs). This combination of green technology will help Hornsey Vale  generate some of its own power to improve temperature control in the building and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for heating and electricity, which will be good for the climate and help to keep the energy bills down.

This year we’re thinking about how to make the most of the outdoor space at Hornsey Vale by converting the tarmac area behind the Main Hall into a comfy seating area where people can sit in the sunshine and perhaps enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

We’re still working on the plans, but it will probably mean resurfacing the area with something nicer than tarmac and introduce some planting as well. Watch this space for more details!

Want to get involved?

Hornsey Vale still has space on the management committee for new Trustees, or if you are interested in joining one of our sub-committees (volunteer, maintenance, fundraising and events), please contact Laura at info@hornseyvale.org for more details.

We are also looking for more volunteers with a hobby or expertise which they could draw on to run events and activities, for example sewing, singing or languages. We offer Tempo time credits for volunteering. For details, please see the Volunteering page.
