Welcome to our Newsletter for May and June 2026.
In this newsletter, say a final goodbye to a member of our community, Peter Budge.
We will also give you a round up of the hustings held in April ahead of the local elections, update you on what’s happening in the coming weeks, introduce our Summer Ageing Well sessions, and share an unfortunate update about vandalism at the centre.
If you’re out and about and fancy something nice to eat in a friendly setting, then why not pop into our popular Soup Café between 11.30am and 2pm every Monday during term time. Enjoy a bowl of delicious freshly-made soup (soup served 12.00 – 1.30pm; free, suggested donation £2) and a chat with our friendly group of regulars and volunteers.
Peter Budge

From Mary, Peter’s wife and trustee at Hornsey Vale:
“Peter Budge passed away peacefully on 8th May at the age of 83. Peter in better health used appear as a Green Santa at our Christmas Fairs at Hornsey Vale, and this picture shows him at one of our fairs promoting Growing Communities (which has a collection point at the Centre).”
Local elections 2026
Local elections took place here on 7th May 2026, when we again acted as a polling station.
As a charity, we also played our part in the democratic process by hosting a hustings for the local elections on Sunday 19th April. Candidates for Stroud Green Ward from three of the political parties explained what policies they would pursue and answered questions from the audience.
It was a courteous and lively discussion between the candidates and nearly 50 people in the audience which lasted for two hours and went deep into the details of local concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour, looking after our parks and Haringey’s spending priorities.
The debate also touched on the vital importance to the community of Hornsey Vale and other community centres and how the Council can best support the work we do. We look forward to working closely with the newly elected Councillors.

Wellbeing for Over 50s
Our Ageing well activities will also be continuing throughout Spring and Summer, these activities are open for all local over 50s and most are by donation.
Whilst our Gong Maestro Joanna takes a break to travel around the festivals for Summer, we are delighted to share that yogi Jim with be offering a Chair based Yoga and Relaxation session on Wednesday 15th July at 3pm.
Jim has been practicing and teaching for over 20 years and has a unique approach to helping stimulate the body and mind to feel good and healthy.
He layers yoga, self massage (great for the immune system), breathwork and relaxation techniques together to form a holistic session, designed to ease and de-stress the body. There’s always a lot of laughter too. Come by and check it out. To register, please email info@hornseyvale.org or call 0208 348 4612.

Centre News – Vandalism and toilet closures.
Unfortunately there have been some incidents of vandalism in the building recently which put the toilets out of action and cost us hundreds of pounds to fix. It’s a great shame that a few irresponsible individuals have decided to create problems for the many people who enjoy coming to Hornsey Vale.
We’ve had to make the difficult decision to keep the toilets open to the public during office hours only. This will usually be from 8am to 4pm or 5pm: a notice will be put up each day with the closing time. We hope this will be a temporary measure until we can put a long-term solution in place.
Want to get involved?
Hornsey Vale still has space on the management committee for new Trustees, or if you are interested in joining one of our sub-committees (volunteer, maintenance, fundraising and events), please contact Laura at info@hornseyvale.org for more details.
We are also looking for more volunteers with a hobby or expertise which they could draw on to run events and activities, for example sewing, singing or languages. We offer Tempo time credits for volunteering. For details, please see the Volunteering page.
