Lunch Club with a side of poetry

A small, enjoyable monthly Lunch Club was held at Hornsey Vale on March 2.

The centre welcomed guest Alice Martin from mental health nonprofit MIND in Haringey. Alice led a short session as a sample of the group’s new Read and Connect Shared Reading Group, based at MIND on Stapleton Hall Road in Stroud Green.

Alice and lunch attendees took turns reading Maya Angelou’s evocative poem Still I Rise,  and sharing thoughts on its language and meaning. Lunch was ready, but the group was keen to tackle a second poem, so Alice led a short but lively discussion on Derek Walcott’s Love After Love. MIND’s Read and Connect Shared Reading Group is held at Mind in Haringey on a Wednesday morning through to the end of April 2022. For more information email Paul Higgins on paul@reachandconnect.net.

Participants were then ready for chef Alfie Bown’s warming Brazilian fish stew, followed by a very tasty chocolate tart, and tea and coffee.

It was particularly lovely to welcome back a few familiar Lunch Club faces we’d not seen in some time. We do hope in time that many in our community who used to enjoy Lunch Club shall venture back—it’s a wonderful chance to relax, enjoy good food and meet new people. Next Lunch Club dates are May 4 and June 1. Call the office on 020 8348 4612 or email Emma on info@hornseyvale.org to book a place.
